Electronic noses (e-noses) have been around for decades. Our most recent innovation is a cloud based e-nose for industrial applications. It aims to be the world’s most advanced e-nose, yet simple and flexible to use.

What is an electronic nose?

An e-nose is an instrument aimed at measuring and recognising odor. The name e-nose is a bit misleading. Electronic noses cannot detect smell as such. They actually consists of multiple fairly standard chemical sensors that respond to various groups of chemicals. The key element of the e-nose is the way the signals from these sensors are being interpreted and correlated to odor. The correlation or model may be anything from simple linear regression to more complex neural networks.

What is the cloud based virtual e-nose?

Our latest development is a virtual e-nose. It moves the complex mathematical correlation to the cloud. The field sensors report to a central cloud system which is responsible for calculation and interpreting results as an e-nose.

What is the real innovation here?

A traditional e-nose can only utilise data from its internal array of sensors. Our cloud e-nose can turn any set of existing industrial sensors into an e-nose. It can even use information from other types of sensors. And this is the key innovation. We can for instance use wind direction. A sensor placed on a plant perimeter will detect smells from different parts of the site depending on the wind direction. So, by adding wind direction to the equation we can improve performance of the e-nose. For industries with variable emissions we can utilise production and process data to improve correlation with emission levels. Being cloud based there is no limit to what models we can run, including machine learning and AI.
